In July of 1937, Strong and New Vineyard residents joined together to organize th Porter Lake Fish and Game Association. During the next few years the association was inactive but people from the area began to buy lots and build camps near the lake. During this time, the fishing declined, the dam had deteriorated, and no stocking of fish had taken place for several years. In the spring of 1946, G.W. Judkins and Percy Morrison of Wilton, contacted some of the old club members and many of the new camp owners and on July 14, 1946, held a meeting at the Forster Building in Strong to elect officers and begin a campaign for better fishing. Working with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Game, the group was able to plan for and restore the dam, clear the spawning brooks and improve fishing. By 1950, this conservation minded group grew to 40 members who held well attended meetings with movies and a lunch of oyster stew. The years that followed saw the development of more camps with a greater number of people interested in outdoor recreational activities year round. The growing development put more pressure on the lake and required additional vigilance by the association with a continued commitment to good fishing, preservation of water quality, and good conservation practices of the land and water use. Many association members have worked hard over the years to provide enjoyment for campers while working hard to preserve this natural treasure in Franklin County.
